Skin Cancer Awareness 101

April 4, 2010

Summer is approaching and you might be ready to hit the beach or the pool, but be sure to pack your sunscreen!

Did you know?

  • Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, second only to heart disease, and skin cancer is the most common type of cancer.
  • Skin cancer generally develops in the outermost layer of skin, the epidermis, which means that a tumor is usually visible.
  • The three most common forms of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell cancer, and melanoma. These three types of skin cancer are all named after the type of skin cell from which it arises.
  • Melanoma is less common than basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell cancer, but it is the most serious of the three.
  • Most cases of skin cancer are linked to sun exposure. Keep in mind that people with light skin are more susceptible to skin cancer, which means that even people who do not sunbathe can get skin cancer.
  • Early signs of skin cancer may include changes in the skin that will not heal (such as a pimple that will not go away) patches of discolored skin, and changes in existing moles.
  • Although it is impossible to completely avoid sun exposure, you can lower your chances of developing skin cancer by applying sunscreen daily and wearing protective clothing such as long pants and long-sleeved shirts.
