Colon Cancer Awareness: Get Over the Embarassment

May 21, 2010

The embarrassment factor alone is enough to prevent most people from learning about colon cancer, and that shouldn’t be the case. Colon cancer, or cancer of the large intestine, often begins as small benign (noncancerous) clumps of cells that are called polyps. Polyps may be so small that they initially produce no symptoms, which is why doctors recommend regular screening tests to identify polyps that may lead to colon cancer.

One of the first symptoms of colon cancer is bleeding from the rectum or blood mixed in with your stool when you go to the bathroom. Most people mistakenly assume that the bleeding is due to hemorrhoids, and this incorrect self-diagnosis may cause them significant harm down the road. However, rectal bleeding can also be internal, or hidden, and an iron deficiency may show up in your routine blood work during a physical if you’re experiencing internal rectal bleeding. If a tumor in your colon gets large enough, it may also cause stomach pains, unexplained weight loss, or a frequency in going to the bathroom – among many other symptoms.

As with most cancers, the earlier colon cancer is detected, the easier it is to treat. That’s why it’s imperative that you go see your doctor immediately if you are experiencing any symptoms and think that something may be wrong. Colon cancer may be detected through a blood test of your fecal matter, but your doctor will probably also recommend a test called a colonoscopy which looks inside your colon.

You might be embarrassed to discuss these things — even with your doctor — but when it comes to your health and possibly your life, embarrassment is not worth it.

If you or someone you know is fighting colon cancer, then you understand the need to spread awareness. Here at Awareness Gift Boutique, we spend our time “Creating Awareness for Those Matters that Matter” and we have a wide selection of Colon Cancer Awareness merchandise and apparel.
